Founding date of 1980s

1980s seems like a much too far back date for the group's origins. I'm unsure on how to source it but I am fairly sure the Com was founded far far more recently, probably around the mid-2010s. Gregory "Greg" Heffley (talk) 09:00, 24 August 2025 (UTC)

The article doesn't make the claim that what's referred to as the Com started in the 1980s. The quote is "Independent investigators say Chetal was secretly a member of the Com, also referred to as the Comm or the Community, an online network of chat groups that has its roots in the hacking underground of the 1980s and functions as a kind of social network for cybercriminals or aspiring ones".

It's not even the NYT making the claim, its unnamed "independent investigators" and I think the way the quote is being used is an incorrect interpetation.

Like if one was to say that a new genre of music has its roots in an older genre of the 1980s one would not take that to mean the new genre started in the 1980s.

A lot of the things one would associate with The Com didn't even exist in the 1980s so I think its pretty ridiculous to make the claim that it was created in the 1980s. If we take the claim to be true then "The Com" isn't meaningfully distinguished from hacker culture as a whole, which is clearly incorrect. D1551D3N7 (talk) 20:59, 1 September 2025 (UTC)

I don't know who wrote this, but com isn't some 'network of cyber-criminals', it's moreso a blanket term that encompasses all of that stuff, with most of it being very tame. I knew about com waaay before I knew about that 764 shit and I didn't associate it with anything super malicious. I think the Com can be defined as the "young, Western cybercrime community", but I'm not sure how to source that. "Extortcom" groups definitely did emerge out of that in some way, hence why the "Com" name is shared between the two, but most reporting tends to focus on Extortcom anyway. I do agree the article should be a lot more broad. For example, the info on Riley Williams and Spawnism can probably be moved to the CVLT or 764 articles. As someone who's dealt with com groups personally, I know a lot of the information here is inaccurate. However, com groups are a recent phenomenon and don't have much media coverage, so there aren't really any good sources to cite from. I think more accurate information about the com from mainstream news sources will emerge about 2-3 years from now, and until then, it's best to wait. Game2Winter (talk) 00:35, 18 October 2025 (UTC)

I don't think any cybercrime/hacking group can be considered part of the Com. Another issue is that (in my opinion) both things called "the Com" are two distinct but overlapping entities. I do not have any sources for that, to be fair, but I believe that to be the current situation. I do not think this article delineates this well enough. Neo-nazi

"The Com have been revealed to also be members of 764, a neo-Nazi child exploitation network."

According to the source ref for the above quote and the article for 764, the term 'neo-nazi' has little to nothing to do with 764.
