Gold medals

Are any of these correct.

James Rendel did not get a gold medal for "Particulars on the construction of Lary bridge" see http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=mR4AAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA66&#v=onepage&q&f=false: Minutes volume 1 1848

There are silver and gold medals - the sources given do not state which was awarded.

Ditto - (biographers lie) in the the book "Samuel Colt: a man and an epoch" by Martin Rywell he states

"Samuel Colt received the award of a gold medal and a life membership"

yet in Minutes of proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Volume 12 it states clearly http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pBYAAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA115#v=onepage&q&f=false

"A Telford Medal, in Silver, to Colonel Sam Colt (U. S. America), Assoc. Inst. C.E., for his paper "On the Application of Machinery to the Manufacture of Rotating Chamberedbreech Fire-arms, and the peculiarities of those Arms."

- it's fairly clear.

Removal - inaccuracy, scope etc

The section is too innacurate to remain - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Telford_Medal&diff=497544199&oldid=497532143

• The relationship between the current award and past gold, silver etc medals needs to be established - is a current Telford Medal the same as a gold, or what?
• I don't know how many golds were awarded. However judging from early issues of 'Transactions' or 'Proceedings' (of the Institute of Civil Engineers) they were giving out ~10 or more silvers per year, and ~1 gold. There was also a "telford premium" mentioned - I assume cash or some other prize. I didn't see any 'bronze' medals mentioned.
  • At that rate - the list of silvers would be huge, and the list of golds in hundreds...

• If I can verify the recipients and records (which I am trying to do now) we could limit the recipients' list to gold medals (there was only one per year unless it was a joint award) the other medals appear to be described as Premiums in silver and bronze.Garyvines (talk) 00:06, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Medal v. Premiums

Hi User talk:Mwiki3101,

I noticed you adding 1897 recipients to the Telford Medal article. There was a little discussion about what constituted the medal - see Talk:Telford Medal. It was suggested that only the main medal recipients would be included - this was the gold medal, the others were described as Premiums in silver and bronze, with around 10 each year, so if we tried covering all of them there would be hundreds. I don't have a personal view, but if it goes for one year, it might have to go for all. given that in your own source they separately refer to Telford Medal and Telford Premiums, perhaps it would be better to create a separate section (or even separate article) for the Premiums.Garyvines (talk) 23:37, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

I split the lsit to make a separate heading for Telford Premiums. If the article is to go this way, it will be necessary to recheck all the recipients under the gold category to determine if they are not actually silver or bronze premiums.Garyvines (talk) 00:38, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
