Religious Origin?

The issue with this is that in Hinduism it was made flat and never rounded (3D) like the sai. It has no importance in Buddhism as far as I know (at least not in Tibetan, Chinese, Korean, Japanese or South East Asian Buddhism). Never seen it use religiously in those places.
