The article states that tachyphylaxis and tolerance are synonymous; this is not quite true. Tolerance refers to anything that decreases the biological response to a drug and refers to both short and long-term mechanisms. Tachyphlaxis is a subtype of tolerance that refers to rapid, short-term blunting of the response (a good example is drugs that release monoamines; once all the monoamines have been released and depleted, any further administration of the drug does not produce an added response. This is also in contrast to receptor down-regulation which occurs usually over weeks to months and is distinct from tachyphylaxis.
