The previous version of this page claimed the Phoenician name was Ṭabarqa. Aside from the questionable likelihood that the name would be so divergent from the positions of the Greek and Latin vowels, it's patently wrong w/r/t the Q since K was an explicitly distinct phoneme in Phoenician and Punic and the name was written with the latter. The German version of the page gives the more likely "Tabarka or Thabarka" (the later just reflecting the breathiness of Punic Ts) but I don't know if grammar alone accounts for the N that the name gets written with on coins.
The Portuguese version of this page claims the name was originally Phoenician, not Berber, and meant "place of heather" but doesn't provide a source.—LlywelynII11:56, 3 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
