No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:40, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
TTC → TTC (disambiguation) — per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. I disagree with the recent move of TTC (disambiguation) to TTC. "TTC" should redirect to its most commonly attributed abbreviation, "Toronto Transit Commission". Google search shows the Toronto Transit Commission webpage as the first result even when searched in non-Canadian Google sites (such as Google.co.in). In Google News, it refers to news articles about the Toronto Transit Commission. The Wikipedia article traffic statistics also shows that the Toronto Transit Commission page has been visited several more times in the month of January alone in comparison to other articles listed in the disambiguation page for "TTC". - Being the first result is highly volatile. A better gauge is the first page or first ten pages of results, both of which indicate that there are a number of things people mean when they say TTC. Powers T 19:24, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose - this abbreviation is not likely to conjour up the thought of "Toronto Transit Commission" in most people around the world, unless they are from Canada or Ontario. Personally my first thought was "Teacher Training College". It could refer to many things, in other words. — Amakuru (talk) 23:14, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Move
[edit]In spite of the above, I have decided to be WP:BOLD and make the move anyway, so that TTC redirects to the Toronto Transit Commission page. This is what it did originally, and it was only a result of a screw-up that this ever changed: . Of all the items listed, of those that actually go by the name "TTC", the Toronto Transit Commission is the clear primary usage, even if non-Canadians are perhaps somewhat less likely to have heard of it. --RFBailey (talk) 00:01, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Move this page back

The result of the move request was: page moved back per consensuius. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
TTC (disambiguation) → TTC – Despite a clear lack of consensus for the move, RFBailey decided to substitute his or her own judgement and move the page anyway. WP:BOLD was never meant to be used to overturn WP:CONSENSUS. That should be reverted, as no evidence has been presented that TTC primarily means the Toronto transportation authority. - Support, TTC is common and generic and in the absence of any evidence of a primary topic it should be a disambiguation page. older ≠ wiser 00:48, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Other transit agencies
[edit]If TTC should not redirect to Toronto Transit Commission, why should BART redirect to Bay Area Rapid Transit? (Check out Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2015_April_8#BART.) <<< SOME GADGET GEEK >>> (talk) 17:50, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
Requested move 23 October 2025

The result of the move request was: not moved. There is insufficient support to move the page. While the nominator argued that "TTC" is commonly used to refer to the Toronto Transit Commission in Canada, most editors noted that the acronym is not the primary topic in the global context and that three-letter abbreviations rarely have a single primary meaning. TTC → TTC (disambiguation) – "TTC" should redirect to the Toronto Transit Commission. The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is the most notable topic on the disambiguation page to be synonymous with this name in the English-speaking world. The shortform TTC is used far more frequently than the agency's long name in coverage by numerous sources.
- "TTC to take over Finch West LRT after trial run completed". Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
- "South of Fraser boom in ridership fuels growth in TransLink passenger count". Vancouver Sun.
Additionally, the subreddit r/TTC is dedicated to the Toronto Transit Commission.
The last time this was officially contested appears to be 2011, so I believe it is worth re-discussing.
Edit: also, as User:Some Gadget Geek pointed out, BART redirects to Bay Area Rapid Transit for similar reasons.

- Opposed. The nominator, whose userpage says they live in Canada, provides sources from Canada, which mean basically nothing. Wikipedia's readership is worldwide, and people far from Toronto have generally never heard of that local city commission and have no reason to ever encounter it. It is very uncommon for three-letter abbreviations to have a primary topic, and many different meanings of "TTC" are listed on the disambiguation page. TTC does not have the sort of world-wide recognition as for BBC, CIA, DDT, FBI, LSD, UAE, USA, TNT, or THC. As far as I know, Reddit does not hold open community discussions to carefully choose the names of its groups. BART is four letters, not three, which makes a huge difference. There are 26 times as many four-letter abbreviations to choose from than three-letter ones (or more, since that doesn't count diacritics or mixtures with numbers or other symbols). I strongly doubt this proposal will be successful, and suggest closing the discussion PDQ. — BarrelProof (talk) 00:52, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
- support Clickthrough shows the transit system is overwhelmingly the primary topic —blindlynx 15:41, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. No primary redirect. "synonymous with this name in the English-speaking world" may possibly apply to Canada, but not the rest of the English-speaking world, most of whom will never have heard of it. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:55, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
