- A voxel is a volume element, and might or might not represent a sample that lies on the surface of the object. A surfel is always a sample of the object's surface. Also, voxels can exist outside of the object represented by the collection of voxels, because they are usually structured as a cube or other rectangular 3D grid, in which the object fits, while not occupying the whole grid space. On top of that, voxels have inherent topology information since they are (usually) ordered in a structured rectangular grid, while surfels usually have no topology information at all. --RenevdBerg 12:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
