Condemnation wording

[edit]

The current wording states that Rahma was “condemning the killing of Palestinians in the Gaza war,” but this does not appear to be supported by the cited source. The source instead describes criticism directed at people attending events such as weddings in Tel Aviv in the context of the recent war, not a general or explicit condemnation of killings. As written, the sentence appears to attribute a position to Rahma that is not directly stated in the source. Per WP:V and WP:NOR, I suggest revising the wording to reflect only what is explicitly supported by the citation, or removing the clause if no additional source supports it. ~2026-25274-51 (talk) 06:41, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think it's within reason to say that the quote "I’m like, 'You are going to a wedding in Tel Aviv right now when there are 80,000-plus dead people, including women and children, half a mile away'" is condemning the killing of those people, but if that's an issue, we can just use the direct quote from the interview. It could instead say to which host Kareem Rahma said he agreed, adding "there are 80,000-plus dead people, including women and children, half a mile away [from Tel Aviv]". I agree that using the direct quote is the best approach here. But I think it’s important not to trim it in a way that removes the central context of the remark. The reference to attending a wedding in Tel Aviv is integral to the statement as presented in the source, and omitting it risks changing the nature of what was said.
Per WP and WP, we should aim to reflect the source accurately and in context rather than selectively quoting portions that could alter its meaning or emphasis. Including the full quote (or a minimally trimmed version that preserves the wedding reference) seems preferable to avoid introducing a different kind of distortion. ~2026-24990-79 (talk) 19:33, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I was trying to avoid including extensive quotes into the article, but if you think that changes the meaning of the quote too much, it could be rewritten as to which host Kareem Rahma said he agreed, adding "I’ve never seen something so shocking where they’re like, 'I'm so oppressed.' I'm like, 'You are going to a wedding in Tel Aviv right now when there are 80,000-plus dead people, including women and children, half a mile away.'" Truthnope (talk) 20:05, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
That does seem clunkier but I do think any shortened version will change the meaning and context. So including the whole thing seems most accurate. ~2026-24990-79 (talk) 21:28, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also think it would be better to include quotation marks around “American Zionists,” since those are the speaker’s exact words. Omitting the quotation marks risks making it read as Wikipedia’s phrasing rather than a direct characterization from the source.
Per WP and MOS, preserving exact wording in cases like this helps ensure accuracy and avoids unintended interpretation. ~2026-24990-79 (talk) 21:35, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Relatedly, for the Rosenfeld quote, I think it would be more accurate to include the full sentence rather than stopping mid-thought. The source continues that Casablancas’s phrasing “suggested that the singer wanted to offend while maintaining a degree of plausible deniability.”
As it stands, the quotation is truncated in a way that presents Rosenfeld’s conclusion but omits the reasoning that immediately follows. Per WP and WP, it’s generally better to avoid selectively shortening quoted material where doing so changes the emphasis or leaves out explanatory context.
Including the full quote (or paraphrasing the full idea) would more faithfully reflect the source’s analysis. ~2026-24990-79 (talk) 21:41, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
What are you referring to when you say WP and WP, and WP and MOS?
Also, please start using the edit summary when you edit the article to explain what changes you're making, or why you're making them. For small edits, it's not a big deal, but when there are disagreements and other edits start reverting your changes, it doesn't help when you just revert those changes without explanation. It is good that you started discussing those edits on the talk page. Truthnope (talk) 22:21, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
