I wonder about this claim of ``having died out arpund the time of World War 1´´. In the Damon Runyon story, _Blood Pressure_ dated 1930, the narrator and Rusty Charlie go to Ikey the Pig's to play stuss. (Which is how I ended up here, trying to figure out what sort of game stuss was.) Runyon's stories of Broadway -- of which this is a classic -- described current events in New York City at the time when he was writing. While this is not proof positive that stuss was still being played in the 20s, it is highly suggestive.
