Conservation Status

Does anyone have citable information on the current conservation status for this genus? That would be a very valuable addition to the article. Arjuna (talk) 03:09, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

I believe it would be difficult to discuss the conservation issue at genus level, simply because this topic is usually analyzed at species level. Since the Strombus species are so widely distributed, it would be hard to estimate a conservation status for the genus as a whole (therefore those would probably be poor estimatives). What could be done though, is a succint list of conservation status for each species within the genus to be displayed in this article, leaving the detailed information to the species articles. This isn't an easy task, though. Such information may be quite hard to gather.--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 04:06, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Excellent point, and actually I realized that after I posted this. I checked CITES, and the only listed species is "Strombus gigas" (they are still using the old name). The IUCN Red List pulls up nothing for the entire genus Strombus (or Eustrombus). Of course given the way the CITES and Red List systems work, that doesn't mean there aren't conservation status issues there -- it is quite possible that given the generally low-level of information on marine inverts and the lack of resources to assess their current conservation status ("just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you"!), that's still the best data to go on for now.
