Meaning
[edit]The name is often translated as "proud foot" by people who obviously used a dictionary of modern day German. But, the article 'The German Roots of Nicholas Stoltzfus' by T. Douglas Mast and Truman E. Mast (see []) finds a German ancestor named Steltzefuss which they translate as stilt-foot (most likely someone with a peg leg). On the other hand, there is also the name Stoltefuß and variations (see []) derived from someone strutting proudly or in a stilted ("stelzend") way. -- 2003:E5:1749:5FB3:4DE3:1ED9:1E5E:6EF8 (talk) 16:10, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
