Requested move 31 August 2026
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. The raw !vote is 3–3, but the arguments presented warrant a WP:NOTAVOTE close.
The main opposition to the move has been that people know Sting as Steven Borden (implicitly, that he is know as such to the extent that his son cannot be the primary topic for the name), but opposers have not backed up this assertion with evidence, while the supporters have backed up their claims with evidence. The link to the WCW website clearly says "Steve Borden". Only a supporter provided any source showing an instance of Sting referred to as "Steven Borden", and that was in the context of demonstrating how uncommon it is compared to "Steve Borden" (note that the link to the Google book search actually autocorrects you to "Steve Borden", so you have to insist on "Steven Borden" to see those results, but they are pretty much the same as far as I can tell).
With all that in mind, I do not see how I can afford much weight to the argument that Sting is known as "Steven Borden" enough to prevent his son being the primary topic here. (closed by non-admin page mover) –Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 00:14, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
Steven Borden Jr. → Steven Borden – Move over redirect to Sting (wrestler). All Steven Borden Jr.'s matches have been as "Steven Borden", not "Steven Borden Jr." - https://www.cagematch.net/?id=2&nr=33071&page=4. Sting (wrestler) is occasionally known as Steve Borden, but rarely if ever as Steven Borden. McPhail (talk) 08:32, 31 August 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 12:15, 7 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support, he's PRIMARY for the name.--Ortizesp (talk) 13:36, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose This only will cause confusion as Sting's real name is Steven Borden. In fact, Sting has even wrestled as Steve Borden. This was even displayed on World Championship Wrestling's website. Unknownuser45266 (talk) 19:29, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
- It is not proposed to move the article to "Steve Borden", but rather "Steven Borden". Sting has never wrestled as, or been known as, "Steven Borden". McPhail (talk) 13:43, 5 September 2026 (UTC)
- Weak Oppose Just to avoid confusion with his father. Sting is one of the greatest legend in pro wrestling. I was going to say "every source call him Steven Borden". However, we can't ignore the fame of his father. There are other examples, sources called Ted DiBiase Jr just Ted DiBiase, but it's Ted DiBiase Jr. to avoid confusion with his father. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 08:52, 5 September 2026 (UTC)
- Sting is known as "Steve Borden" though, not "Steven Borden". Most sources refer to him as "Steve Borden". McPhail (talk) 13:45, 5 September 2026 (UTC)
- Comment: It seems undesirable that the nominator did not point out that the proposed move would change the topic that is currently referred to as Steven Borden. — BarrelProof (talk) 18:27, 8 September 2026 (UTC)
- Fair point - I will amend. McPhail (talk) 19:13, 8 September 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose to avoid confusion with his father, Steven "Steve" Borden Sr. aka Sting. Think of the real names instead of just ring names. Think of their personal lives, too. If someone calls you Steven, which Steven are we talking about? The son (or "Little Sting") or the father (or "Big Sting")? This is why the Jr. is necessary because searching for Steven Borden without the Jr. will just return his father Sting. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 03:57, 10 September 2026 (UTC)
- Can you provide examples of Sting being referred to as "Steven Borden"? McPhail (talk) 21:02, 10 September 2026 (UTC)
- It's literally his real name. Hansen Sebastian (Talk) 16:42, 11 September 2026 (UTC)
- Can you provide examples of Sting being referred to as "Steven Borden"? McPhail (talk) 21:02, 10 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support per nominator. While I have also considered the example above of the Ted DiBiase and Ted DiBiase Jr. articles, both subjects were known as Ted DiBiase, whereas Sting is known as Steve Borden and his son as Steven. It would make sense remove the suffix and have a hatnote distinguishing the two and directing to the Sting article. The son's birth name also isn't sourced in the article to confirm it actually contains Jr. in it. Sekyaw (talk) 02:43, 11 September 2026 (UTC)
- As I understand it, "Jr." isn't usually on birth certificates; it's just a way of acknowledging that the name of the child is the same as that of the parent (and not the same as the grandparent). — BarrelProof (talk) 04:49, 11 September 2026 (UTC)
