Living person and citations
[edit]Firstly, it says at the top this is a 'biography of a living person'. This is not the case - the subject died in 1958.
Secondly, there is an entire paragraph without citation, regarding the type of person Butterworth was. This seems to be supposition, and doesn't belong in an encyclopaedia, unless it can be backed up (i.e. respected by peers, revered by subordinates can be supported with quotes from his peers/subordinates).

Dear "Smiler": The paragraph about Mr. Butterworth's personality was drawn directly from Mr. Butterworth's obituary in the journal "Nature", which you would have known if you had bothered to look it up. Cwkmail (talk) 18:20, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
- Dear "Cwkmail": If the paragraph is a quote, then it should be in quotes. As for '[bothering] to look it up', I'm not a subscriber to Nature, and I certainly don't have a 1958 copy lying around for reference. You can hardly expect a user to check this information. Thank you for adding the inline citation. --smiler (talk) 10:28, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Photograph
[edit]Just providing some more details on the portrait photo of Butterworth that I've just added. Butterworth is sometimes wrongly depicted as someone else, as there didn't seem to be a proper portrait photo available.
This photo has been scanned by the Science Museum at Wroughton. According to Science Museum Library and Archives, this photo appeared in an appreciation of Butterworth's work written by A. B. Wood and published in the Journal of the Royal Naval Scientific Service (Jan 1946).
It is an official image taken as part of Butterworth's work at the Admiralty, and so should be covered by Crown Copyright. According to the Museum, one should be able to reproduce it under the terms of the National Archives Open Government Licence (OGL). Guettel (talk) 02:05, 29 July 2025 (UTC)
