Where in the official repos is Arch Linux?
[edit]Why do people keep on changing the 3.0 release to Arch Linux when it's nowhere to be found here: https://repo.steampowered.com/steamos/dists/clockwerk/
Because that repository directory listing is 2 years old at least (look at the modification dates in the directory listings), things seems to have changed internally since then. Valve says themselves that the Steam Deck is going to be running on SteamOS 3.0 which is based off of Arch Linux (Official FAQ), and news sites (ZDNet, GamingOnLinux, ShackNews 9To5Linux) say this as well. I don't think it's "nowhere to be found" as you said. ROllerozxa (talk) 08:46, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
- Until the team actually provides the repo it's all just words, also it's a bit hard to believe they would risk it with such an unstable distro and why would the official repo already have debian 9 in place? 188.21.103.184 (talk) 09:24, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
- @188.21.103.184: Valve has stated that SteamOS 3 is Arch-based. Multiple reliable sources have repeated this. Why would Valve lie about it? They have a working prototype too so it's unlikely they would change their mind at this point. Saucy[talk – contribs] 11:10, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
- @188.21.103.184: Here is a repo: https://repo.steampowered.com/arch/valveaur/. While this is not in the steamos directory, Saucy already mentioned that this directory was not updated since a long time. Arch got endorsed by Valve after Ubuntu wanted to drop 32bit libraries: https://steamcommunity.com/games/221410/announcements/detail/2957094910196249305. Also rolling-release != unstable. You fell for a common myth. 77.182.25.44 (talk) 16:35, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
- This seems to be the new repo: https://steamdeck-packages.steamos.cloud/archlinux-mirror/ James (talk) 04:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm failing to understand how this infobox works.
[edit]SteamOS has both beta and preview releases, they are on different channels. I'm failing to recognize where should I add a new entry into the infobox for beta release, because there is nothing between "source model" and "marketing target" in the code where the latest releases supposed to be. Logo
[edit]So Valve released guidelines for using Steam branding by OEMs. When should we wait for a proper new logo? Ahri Boy (talk) 13:37, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Ah nevermind. I already requested at c:COM:GLI. Ahri Boy (talk) 13:58, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Branding is not the same as the logo itself, it uses the logo though Masem (t) 14:48, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
SteamOS Development
[edit]@Masem: Disagree with your revert in Old revision of SteamOS as over zealous application in the vein of WP:WL. You've cited WP:NOT#CHANGELOG as the cause of the revert, but this is not an Exhaustive logs of software updates as it only covers the major releases (which at current cadence are effectively annual) and it only includes a summary of key features which summarises development as per linked guidelines. A condensed summary of major milestones and prominent features changes in Linux distros is very common, see Linux kernel version history, Debian version history, etc.-dasime (talk)
- Those pages are problems too. The big thing is using primary sources to fill it out. Changes to software as identified in secondary sources is fine, but when you are only using primary sources, that approaching the CHANGELOG problem. A better example of what we want is iOS version history Masem (t) 14:42, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
- If your main objection is to an excessive use of primary sources I can swap those references out. No Linux distribution will ever receive the amount of coverage any Apple or iOS update might receive, but I am pretty sure Phoronix will have articles for most if not all SteamOS updates. dasime (talk) 15:18, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
- Phoronix is not a reliable source. If we do not have reliable sources summarizing the release history, then its not our place to include it in depth. We summarize what reliable sources say. Masem (t) 01:25, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- I restored my original edit with the intention of improving the sources as discussed above, but you reverted my change again before I had a chance to.
- My initial change wasn't some drive by vandalism or a minor change. I think the current version of the page fails to appropriately represent how SteamOS 3 is iterating, with the majority of the discussion focused on the intial release and adjacent hardware.
- I believe my >7k character edit showed I've made a reasonable effort to present the current situation in a readable format, even if you appear to disagree with the principle of it.
- I do not see how I could move forward with resubmitting this change. I don't feel like you've engaged in me in good faith on this edit, instead it feels like I have to somehow guess what potential version you might not object to. dasime (talk) 22:08, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

2026 Steam Machine, intent to expand SteamOS to PC hardware
[edit]It seems noteworthy that Valve has posted on the Steam Machine store page that SteamOS 3.8 can be installed on PCs with AMD GPUs and eventually a broader swath of the PC ecosystem. "For our part, we are continuing to work toward enabling SteamOS to be used on more hardware than just ours. In fact, with the newly-released SteamOS 3.8, you can run the same code and operating system as Steam Machine on your own living-room PC using whatever PC parts you want: learn more here. Right now, only AMD GPUs are supported, but we're working on expanding support for the future." ~2026-36509-68 (talk) 05:51, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
