Comparison to other countries

Unless this phenomenon was restricted to Sweden (which I somewhat doubt), it should be put in perspective and linked to relevant articles on the general phenomenon or the situation in other countries. Tomas e (talk) 15:06, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

It's true that this phenomenon existed also elsewhere, at least to some extent (Prussia is often mentioned), but the issue became crucially important in the public debate, literature and politics of Sweden in the 1920s and 1930s, chiefly parallell to the crofter problem in Finland before 1918 (see: Finnish Civil War#Finland divided into White and Red). In retrospect, economic scientists have shown that the story presented to the public was, at least, slightly exaggerated.

Thus, as a matter of public debate, the statare question may be, if not unique at least, of significant importance as a specifically Swedish issue:

1. The extensive parish records makes Sweden a popular field for historians
2. It has a background in the "freer" thinking of the Age of Liberty (1718–1772) in Sweden with Finland (although the conditions making the system profitable, and a viable alternative for employees and employers alike, rose first in the 19th century)
