That is not the first edition US cover.

The blue background artwork in the current version of this article is not the one from when it first came out in the US. I bought it as soon as it came out because I was a fan of the preceding game StarForce: Alpha Centauri. The cover was a white background with a bunch of red explosions on it, and a flying soldier is a high tech suit that isn't the closed helmet one shown in the current article. The text was all in black. BoardGameGeek has the cover I got here:

I've seen various comments while searching the web suggesting that the blue background one is from the UK edition. Or it might be from a later edition packaged in a cardboard box. The original was in SPI's usual flat plastic tray packaging. Most of their games came out in such plastic trays. Later reprints or deluxe editions might come out in cardboard boxes.
