local gravity

As the article mentions local gravity, or something similar, as contrasted to standard gravity. Should we have an article, or link to a section of this one, describing local gravity? That is, that changes with altitude, or (usually small) centripetal force. Gah4 (talk) 05:35, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The latest ISO 80000 does not mention gn

The "standard acceleration of free fall" was removed from ISO 80000 in 2019. Nearest thing I could find was in the current entry for weight (item 4-9.2),

"Fg = m g where m is mass (item 4-1) and g is local acceleration of free fall. It should be noted that, when the reference frame is Earth, this quantity comprises not only the local gravitational force but also the local centrifugal force due to the rotation of the Earth."

It was definitely a part of the 2006 version. I found this remark under "acceleration of free fall" (item 3-9.2),

"Standard acceleration of free fall: gn := 9,80665 m/s2 In English this quantity, gn, was earlier also called 'standard acceleration due to gravity'. See 3rd CGPM (1901)."

Note the reference at the end. The CGPM of 1901 is the source of this standard, not the ISO. ~2026-33389-57 (talk) 19:14, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
