The Coup in 1948

A lot of this article is extremely subjective, and somewhat disillusioned - there was no coup in 1948: The Communist Party was elected democratically by the majority of the people. Whilst one can argue that perhaps the StB played a role in securing communist sympathy, it is very narrow minded to refer to it as a coup.

There was definitely a communist coup in 1948. The communists have won the elections in 1946 in the Czech part of Czechoslovakia (they lost in Slovakia by about 25%). In 1948, they seized the power. Nazgul02 (talk) 23:13, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Attempted rewrite

What I've done is for starters. The StB 'dead student' caper needs verifying, as I'm at risk of original research - cos I can't remember the magazine i read the interview in.

The notion of a coup is part of the cultural mythology, and - yes - it should be corrected.

The diacritics are fine!

STB -> StB

The article should be moved to StB (Czechoslovak State Security). The all uppercase letters was never used by them and I do not see the STB form anywhere else online. Pavel Vozenilek 22:29, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

You guys might find it interesting to note that the KGB 'advisor' present on November 17 1989 (look at the Wikipedia Velvet Revolution entry) was none other than Vladimir Kryuchkov - one of the Gang of Eight behind the failed Moscow coup of 1991.

Citation needed

From its establishment on June 30, 1945, the StB was controlled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The Party used the StB as an instrument of power and repression; State Security spied on and intimidated political opponents of the Party and forged false criminal evidence against them, facilitating the communists' rise to power in 1948. Even before Czechoslovakia became a communist state, the StB obtained forced confessions by means of torture, including the use of psychoactive drugs, blackmail, and kidnapping. After the coup d'état of 1948, these practices developed under the tutelage of Soviet advisers.
