- I would disagree that waves are the cause, because wave amplitudes and periods are insignificant, in the case where this effect would be seen, compared to large ships' sizes. The diagrams are actually misleading in this respect.--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:22, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Allure of the Seas
[edit]According to the article of Allure of the Seas, it was this ship, not her sister ship Oasis of the Seas, that passed under the low bridge. Or perhaps they both did, but in any case, they are almost identical, and the article on the Allure specifically says it was the Allure, and that the whole story about the squat effect being the only thing that allowed sufficient clearance is a myth created by sensationalist media types, who claimed that the funnels only cleared the bridge by a foot, when in reality it was several meters, meaning that it would have had sufficient clearance regardless. This means that any squat effect present had no impact on whether the ship could clear the bridge. I added a statement to this effect on the main page, but for some reason I am unable to add any references; when I click "edit section", it just shows text saying "/references", and in Beta, it just gives me a template that doesn't seem to do anything at all..45Colt 03:54, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Squat in channels with muddy/silty bottoms
[edit]Squat as described here is only true in deep water or channels without a muddy/silted bottom. In those channels, the ship sinks until the hull begins to penetrate the area of increased density near the bottom. When that happens the buoyancy of the water begins to offset the effect of squat. Eventually, there is an equilibrium where the upward force of increased buoyancy equals the downward force from the squat effect. The ship continues without running aground. I was a ship pilot for 30 years in Houston and very often ran large ships with less than a meter UKC clearance at speeds up to 12 knots across Galveston Bay without incident.
Pilot associations were aware of the failure of the squat formula to predict draft of moving ships in their channels for many years. Finally the pilots in the Europe persuaded scientists at Ghent University in Belgium to investigate. They were able to verify the empirical findings of pilots and offered an elegant explanation.
