What does the sentence "The invention of SLCDs revolutionized rock climbing because it meant that parallel or flared cracks could be protected" mean? Protected how? Is that climbing jargon? This could use some clarificaiton.Knag (talk) 19:40, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

'Protected' in this context means that a cam (aka protection) could be placed into cracks which would prevent the climber hitting the floor if they fell. The invention of cams could be said to revolutionize climbing because it allows climbs that may only have flared or parallel cracks to have protection placed in them - making them much safer to climb.
