[edit]While the silk this spider "spits" evolved from venom glands, technically venom has to be injected to be called venom. Contact poison is poison, not venom. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.209.12.155 (talk) 07:49, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
There certainly are conflicting definitions, but one commonly made distinction between "venom" and "poison" hinges on the question of the degree to which the toxin is deliberately delivered by the creature, not simply on whether or not it is injected. Venom is deliberately delivered (e.g. a spitting cobra spits venom), whereas poison is not deliberately delivered (e.g. a poison dart frog doesn't purposefully rub its skin against predator or prey). From the article: "After making the capture, the spider typically bites the prey with venomous effect." Because this spider typically delivers the same toxin deliberately in two ways -- the web spray and the bite -- the chemical is rightly called a venom. 2806:101E:A:392A:C1D8:C91F:3AC7:240B (talk) 21:19, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
