Add topicAlthough spatial intelligence is a sub-set of GIS it puts a finer point on the requirements of the retail sector by providing a more verticle discussion of what retailers need to understand with this technology. The temptation to prefix the phrase with "retail" should be dismissed as it would not be as available to the Wikipedia community hidden behind that qualifier.

Spatial Intelligence is much more than a subset of GIS. GIS predominantly refers to 2D spatial data such as maps and locations. There is a need to refer to 3D Graphics and the combination of this with traditional BI. 1) For example it is possible that attributes such as temperature vary depending on the Z Coordinate. Pure GIS does not cater for this other than the natural topography of the earth. This is not sufficient for Aviation and Mining for instance. 2) Where GIS is concerned with the question - Where, it does not answer questions related to data sets or attributes that are not spatial. This is the domain of traditional BI. A typical Spatial Intelligence query could be: Which Products sell better at which location (GIS up to now) at what time of the day and by whom (BI Portion).
The tradional GIS and BI Definitions need to remain. Spatial Intelligence is a new and different concept.
