Meanings in other languages

I think the section Spades (suit)#Meanings in other languages is a largely irrelevant list. This is not a dictionnary. A short statement of the fact that the name of the suit in most langauges have such and such meanings, with notable examples and exceptions, would be better. Likewise for the other suits

• Hearts (suit)#Meanings in other languages
• Diamonds (suit)#Meanings in other languages
• Clubs (suit)#Meanings in other languages

In fact, this info might be better summarized in Suit (cards)#Traditional Western playing cards, with a suitable link from each suit.--Noe (talk) 12:41, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Conflict

The line:

"It is often stated that the suit is named after Spanish espada (sword), but this is not likely. In Germany and Scandinavia, Spanish playing cards were not in use, and Spanish loanwords in these languages were rare. It should also be noted that the Spanish name for the French suit is picas - not espadas."

conflicts with this line in Suit (cards):

"The Italian-style suits are the original suits (which is why the English term 'spade' refers not to the tool, but is derived from the Italian word espada = "sword", which this suit represents)"

(#1 of the second set of bullets in the "Traditional Eastern suits and decks" section)

Neither one is cited.

Inconsistent importance

• Talk:Clubs (suit) says "This article has been rated as High-importance on the project's importance scale"
• Talk:Hearts (suit) says "This article has been rated as Mid-importance on the project's importance scale"
• Talk:Diamonds (suit) says "This article has been rated as Low-importance on the project's importance scale"

This seems odd since, as I recall in bridge, their "order of importance" in auctions was clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades.

Thanks for pointing that out; I've reclassified them all as mid-importance. Suit orders within card games vary e.g. in Skat and most central European games it's Clubs, Spades, Hearts and Diamonds. But "importance" here is within the overall subject of board and table games and I reckon card suits are significant enough to raise above the minimum level.
