@Ahunt: Please see MOS:CONFORM, which says "Formatting and other purely typographical elements of quoted text should be adapted to English Wikipedia's conventions without comment provided that doing so will not change or obscure meaning or intent of the text". Wikipedia has its own typographical conventions, and does not observe those of outside sources. Wikipedia uses en dashes in year ranges, not hyphens (there is no subtraction going on).
