cores or cords?

- Soutache is created by weaving a decorative thread around and between two parallel cords and completely covering the cores
Is that last word supposed to be "cores" or "cords"? Either would make sense, with the same apparent meaning, but "cords" would be more reasonable, since cords have been mentioned and cores have not.
