Etymology
[edit]Hi everybody. Correcting "soricomorpha = shrew-form" to "= mouse-form", as the prefix sorico- comes from sōrex in latin, meaning "mouse". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.86.20.231 (talk) 02:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sorex actually means "shrew", not "mouse" (certainly in biological neo-Latin, probably also in classical Latin; see, e.g., , ). Mus is the canonical word for "mouse" in biological Latin. Ucucha (talk) 02:56, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, my classical Latin dictionary also defines "sōrex" as "shrew" and "mūs" as "mouse or rat", so I think this is a misconception. Anaxial (talk) 05:38, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
