Michael Lighthill conclusively showed that the SC is a Kelvin or edge wave. It is not like like other western boundary currents, such as the Gulf Stream. These currents have variability and spinup times of many decades, but the SC has a strong annual signal. Kelvin waves are longitudinal (hence equipartitioned) and advect energy quickly over large distances. Mode-1 internal waves move at about 3m/s.
