Socompan microbes

Etymology

Not up to Featured Article standards

In my opinion this article is not up to Featured Article standards. I hope this doesn't upset anyone. I had to correct the coordinates, which did not meet WP:OPCOORD guidance, and should have been caught at the GA stage. The lead has clarity issues around the word "its", such as "It begins in Peru and runs first through Bolivia and Chile" which, after a sec, one realizes that "It" is the Central Volcanic Zone, which really shouldn't be discussed so much in the lead anyway. Then the article contradicts itself; "its features are well-preserved by the arid climate" followed by "much of the scar is now filled in" referring to the landslide. Next, the first paragraph of the "Geography and geomorphology" section goes on about four barely related topics; rail access, being an apu (no explanation), what the name Socompa might mean, and being within two protected areas (also no explanation). After that there is a detailed write-up of various geological features which seems to me to mix up the subtopics in a haphazard way, with lots of repetition, and heavy, probably WP:UNDUE emphasis on the landslide. I am minded to disagree on these things. The only "its" at the moment seems pretty clear to me. That the scar is filled in is the only exception, and only a partial one since it is recognizable still. I admit that the section about geography might warrant have the human stuff information split out into its own section, though. "Apu" is linked, is a footnote warranted? Protected area does not in my opinion require an explanation. The volcano draws its notability mostly from the landslide so it's correct that it gets so much emphasis. Preemptive page protection...really?

OK, who's idea was it to preemptively page protect this entirely non-controversial Main Page feature article?

Why?

It has always been a hallmark of Wikipedia - at least in any of my experience of the encyclopedia the past nearly 20 years seeking to make such an edit to a main page feature article (as well as Did you knows...) - that anyone can edit it/them. In fact, that used to be its motto, "The Encyclopedia Anyone Can Edit".

Talk about "biting the newbies"...this - instead of both inviting and validating them and their experiences - immediately puts them off and treats them as vandals before they can even make their first edit. Guilty till proven innocent. Why even bother at a place that does not walk its own talk?
