COI edit request: self-selection and population inference from social data
[edit]| This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. Some or all of the changes weren't supported by neutral, independent, reliable sources. Consider re-submitting with content based on media, books and scholarly works. |
Conflict-of-interest disclosure: I am Alex-George Adam, the author of the preprint cited below. I am proposing this addition on the talk page rather than editing the article directly.
Proposed location: In the Criticism and debates section, following the existing list of methodological and ethical concerns.
Proposed text:
Social-media data are often generated through self-selected participation, so an observed share among users who speak does not necessarily identify the corresponding attitude share in a broader population. A 2026 preprint treated the population attitude share as partially identified and proposed reporting bounds and sensitivity analyses based on explicit assumptions about the relative probability of participation.[1]
Rationale: The article identifies social-media posts and digital traces as important social-data sources but does not currently explain that their producers may be a self-selected subset of the target population. The proposed text describes the methodological limitation conservatively and attributes the particular partial-identification application to a preprint.
