Looks like the Studio 54 pic got purged. Too bad, oh well. There's File:Crackspoon.jpg but I don't think that's the type of cocaine spoon this article is talking about.. -- Ϫ 07:02, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Is this really a crime-related article? It doesn't discuss anything illegal - cocaine spoons aren't illegal to own, and both the act of taking cocaine and being under the influence of cocaine are legal. This is a drug-related article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.100.251.19 (talk) 10:37, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Rename?
[edit]This article deserves to be renamed into Snuff spoon. There appears to be nothing specific to cocaine in it. Snuff spoons were around us for thousands of years and were used to ingest various substances, with neither shape, nor function changing. Викидим (talk) 18:53, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Snuff spoons at McDonalds
[edit]Dear colleague @HotRodHundley: regarding your statement that Obviously they can be used
in an edit comment: (1) It is not obvious for me as a person who never observed the said (now extinct) spoons or the process of cocaine ingestion (2) even if I knew this to be plausible, we are not describing WP:TRUTH here, we re-tell the WP:RS (a longer explanation can be found at User:Викидим/Truth). (3) Accordingly, the consensual (per WP:consensus) version of the text was based on the reputable source specified:
- Graybosch, Anthony J. (1 January 2004). "American Beauty". Deconstruction and Reconstruction. BrillL. pp. 91–101. doi:10.1163/9789004495876_013. ISBN 9789042016811.
On p. 96 there, the exact sentence is In the United States, the McDonald's coffee stirrers are, unlike their international counterparts, just straight sticks because in the sixties a rumor circulated that the spoons were being used to snort cocaine.
(underlining is mine). This is why I wrote the text as it was before your change. You cannot change it to another meaning while keeping the source, as it would be against WP:verifiability. You have to either (a) provide a different WP:RS that states your version of the fact or (2) convince the other editors (me included) that I misunderstood the plain English quoted above. In the meantime, I will revert your change to the old version of the text. Please follow the WP:dispute resolution by explaining the reason for you change here. - For the avoidance of doubt, I can understand your concern with "can" and would be perfectly OK with re-phrasing along the lines of "due to their rumored use to snort cocaine" or something similar. Викидим (talk) 05:13, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Викидим:. Yeah the point is "can be used". They objectively, incontrovertibly, could have been used to do that. They were a little spoon that could hold cocaine and be brought up to your nose. The sentence as you've written it implies that the rumor pertains to the possibility that they could be used to do that, rather than, as the text is claiming, that they were used to do that.
- My edit doesn't change the meaning - it reflects the meaning of the text more accurately than what you keep reverting it to. It's also more grammatically correct than "due to their rumored use to snort cocaine". I'm not sure I see the issue you're raising. HotRodHundley (talk) 16:26, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- In my opinion, "rumored case [of replacement] due to use" and "replacement due to rumored use" are two different things, and the source text points to the latter:
rumor circulated that [...] being used
: use was rumored, replacement definite. But we burned way too much time on this subtle issue, so I am going to bow out for now. Викидим (talk) 03:04, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
