The De Boor section seems out of place in an introductory article - it's a bit out of date really: just a restatement of the same spline smoothing problem with an approach to smoothing parameter selection that no statistician would really recommend any more. This is why I added Carl de Boor's approach. It is much simpler and concise, in my opinion, than the one previously mentioned.

Can an expert explain why "Penalized least squares" redirects here? I would think it should go to Tikhonov regularization
