In Loco Parentis
[edit]For those who may be under the impression that schools invented corporal punishment, it must be pointed out that children were beaten at school because they were beaten at home, for the same reasons, and with the same instruments. A father used his walking stick (made of cane), and on the smaller children, a nurse or mother might use her slipper. A teacher was considered to be 'In Loco Parentis', taking the place of a parent, and therefore used the same methods of punishment as the child was used to. As to why children were beaten, the Bible recommended it: Proverbs, 13:24. "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." Beating children because they had not learned their lessons was eventually frowned upon, not only as being cruel, but being an inefficient method of education.
