Slikkerveer expanded in the early sixties, most of the people were working at the shipyards Boele and other small companies. Slowly Slikkerveer became a satelite village for the dockworkers of Rotterdam. Nowadays Slikkerveer is a quite village with a lot of public housing (housing tenure). Due to intensive use of the infrastructure and the close Petrochemical industries Slikkerveer is (and it seroudings) fairly poluted.
