I have several reliable secondary sources that clarify Skip Barber’s early biography, particularly the Harvard/Merchant Marine timeline and his very first race. The current article is unsourced in this area and contains minor inaccuracies about when he actually began racing.

Proposed new paragraph (fully cited):

Skip Barber (born John Barber III; November 16, 1936) is an American former racecar driver and racing school founder. After graduating from Harvard University in 1958 with a degree in English literature, Barber briefly attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and subsequently served in the merchant marine, saving money to purchase his first race car, an Austin-Healey “Bugeye” Sprite.^[1]^[2] He completed Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) driver training at Marlboro, Maryland, and made his competition debut at Lime Rock Park in 1959.^[3]^[4]
