Request to move page to “Skillshot City”
[edit]Hi admins,
I am the developer of this game. As of July 9 2025, the game has been officially renamed from Gene Shift Auto to Skillshot City. This name change is now reflected everywhere — on Steam, Wikidata, press coverage, and our official branding at skillshotcity.com.
The last time I renamed the game (sorry to keep doing this) it was mentioned above that "it has to be come the most commonly used name in reliable sources first. In the case of this video game, as it is only distributed on Steam, the Steam store page is the one and only reliable source, and that now says Skillshot City (as does the official website).
I would like to request that the page be moved to match the new title: Skillshot City.
Thanks and have a nice day! Bencelot (talk) 16:54, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I am just bumping this request :)
- I don't have permissions to move the page and adjust the URL to match the new name of the game - Skillshot City.
- If an admin could make this change it would be greatly appreciated.
- Regards,
- Ben. Bencelot (talk) 07:14, 12 July 2025 (UTC)

Request to move page to "Skillshot City"
[edit]Hi admins,
Following up on my previous request — I have now added a reliable, independent source confirming the game’s renaming to Skillshot City.
The new name is covered by PCGamesN in this article: https://www.pcgamesn.com/geneshift/renamed-skillshot-city-gta-multiplayer-game
The article title is: GTA 2 inspired, free-to-play battle royale changes its name for a second time (published July 9, 2025, by Jamie Hore). It states that the game, originally known as Geneshift, then Gene Shift Auto, has now been officially renamed to Skillshot City.
This reflects current branding across: - The Steam page (https://store.steampowered.com/app/308600/Skillshot_City/) - The official website (https://skillshotcity.com) - All press mentions and community references
Per WP:COMMONNAME, article titles should reflect the name most commonly used in reliable sources. I believe the page should be renamed from Gene Shift Auto → Skillshot City to reflect this.
Thanks again for your help!

Gene Shift Auto → Skillshot City – The game has been officially renamed to "Skillshot City", which is now the Steam title and public brand. The old name is obsolete and no longer used by the developer or players. The new name is now on the official website, steam page, twitter, IGDB page, youtube. It's also received press coverage on the name changed, referenced below. The page should be updated to reflect the new name. Bencelot (talk) 08:45, 17 July 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. - Oppose Per WP:NAMECHANGES. Evidence of common use in reliable INDEPENDENT sources is required for an article's name to be changed. In fact, it's arguable that the article should still be called Geneshift because that is its common name in WP:RS despite the recent name changes, given that it did not get much coverage post name changes. This is because Wikipedia is a historical encyclopedia rather than a promotional site that may be updated at a moment's notice. It's possible in the future, more sources will start talking about your game with the new Skillshot City name and it will be eligible for a name change. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 06:12, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply and pointing me to WP:NAMECHANGES. I want to do things right by wikipedia standards.
- I emailed IGN and got them to change the name on their site. The old name of https://www.ign.com/games/gene-shift-auto now redirects to https://www.ign.com/games/skillshot-city)
- Here is reliable, english, independent press coverage from PCGamesN covering the name change: https://www.pcgamesn.com/geneshift/renamed-skillshot-city-gta-multiplayer-game
- From my reading of WP:NAMECHANGES, the game seems to be in a bit of a grey zone. True, there is only 1 (or now 2) big independent sources using the new name (PCGamesN and IGN). But since the name changed, there have been 0 reliable sources calling it by the old name. Small indie games just don't get talked about much in the press, and WP:NAMECHANGES doesn't really cover what happens if no reliable sources talk about it either way. Still despite a small sample size, the balance seems to be in favor of the new name in reliable sources (2 to 0).
- I also notice that WP:NAMECHANGES mentions the use of common sense. While subjective and certainly not the primary factor, if used as a tie-breaker it seems that common sense should point to the new name. Skillshot City is what the game is now called on all major platforms where users might encounter it. This includes X, Youtube, IGDB, Twitch, Gamejolt, Discord, The Skillshot City Website, and most importantly the Steam Store and inside the game itself.
- I don't want to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes, but I do believe the name change would be more accurate for its users. Please let me know what you think and thanks for all the help keeping the site up to date! Bencelot (talk) 18:18, 23 July 2025 (UTC)

- Oppose and move the article back to Geneshift. The sources overwhelmingly talk about the game as Geneshift, although there is now that one PCGamesN article. Maybe when the game is out of early access and gets reviewed by reliable gaming outlets, there will be grounds to move the article to its new name. The common sense bit in WP:NAMECHANGES applies only if the sources continue writing about the subject, which isn't a given in this case, this game hasn't been covered substantially since 2017.--Mika1h (talk) 11:00, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose We follow the sources. We also follow WP:COMMONNAME which can only really be verified in reliable independent sources. It's always possible the new name will catch on, but if it doesn't, this will remain the common name. Shooterwalker (talk) 15:27, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
