Etymology

[edit]

Kretzoi didn't give an etymology and no other paper has said anything about it either. But as best I can tell: The genus name Sivasmilus is a combination of "Siva-", a common prefix for Siwalik mammals that refers to the Hindu deity Shiva after whom the Siwaliks are named, and the Greek σμίλη/smilē meaning "knife". The specific name copei honors paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope. SilverTiger12 (talk) 23:48, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
