Sirdan is the smallest city in Iran, which is located in the Tarom-e-Sofla district of Qazvin province. Only 240 people - Mostly elderly - constitute the population of this city. The majority of its population has emmigrated to bigger cities of Iran, like Tehran and Qazvin. The mother tongue of its people is Trkish and many of them, especially older ones, do not understand Persian language, the official language of Iran. This might be the only city in Iran that has negative population growth rates and efforts to encourage returning the emmigrants has been in vain to date.The birth and pregnancy rate is exteremly low due to the fact that only a minority constitute the youth at reproductive age in Sirdan. Harsh cold climate of the region,locating in a place far from main areas of any kind, lack of accomodation and transport facillities, shortages of health care supports and a weak job market motivate the inhabiants to emmigrate.
