Flying Saucer Attack

[edit]

I don't have sources, but I would bet money that Flying Saucer Attack's abrasive 1995 cover of "Outdoor Miner" is one of the earliest examples of the "genre". Remember at the time thinking that it was trying to go back to the noisy "Never Understand" / "Feed Me with Your Kiss" aspect of shoegaze rather than the chorus and delay pedal Slowdive style. What they did there was turn up the middle end and treble to max, and likely turned all the mikes to low volumes so they would distort when equalised. See also My Dreaming Hill.
