Motmit, I would hardly describe the £600,000 refurbishment of the lock as routine! Please also give me more information about the convention you refer to relating to the description of the path route. Thanks.Tomintoul (talk) 10:50, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
There are 45 locks on the river, and the EA routinely refurbishes several of them each winter. The EA's annual spend on maintaining waterway installations is about £22m per annum. Although the main focus of the article is the lock itself, a description is provided of the stretch of water upstream of it. Each lock looks after this stretch upstream and has no control over the stretch downstream. This is therefore the appropriate way to structure the information for all the locks so that the picture is complete from Teddington upwards while duplication and inconsistency is avoided. The article is not about the Thames Path nor intended to act as a gazeeer. The path is simply included as one of the features of the upstream reach. The place to chart the route in full is on the Thames Path article and if someone wants to do that then the section details from each of the locks could be used for that purpose. Your contributions in the Shiplake area have been very useful so please don't take it amiss if I have tried to maintain consistency. Note however that Wikipedia is not a newspaper and so latest news should not necessarily be given higher profile. Also, there is a potential problem with updating articles with transitory information as not all editors are as thorough as you have been in keeping the situation updated. Hope that helps.
