It is most closely associated with the Qijia culture, whose artistic style inherits that of the Shijiahe and Xiaojiawuji cultures. This culture is not related to the Steppe people. This beast-faced human has a specific style, similar to that of the Longshan, Liangzhu, and Lingjiatan peoples. 牙璋 English Translation

牙璋

The 2nd image caption under 'Techniques' translates 牙璋 (yá zhāng) as "dented Zhang". What is the source for this translation? As far as I am aware, 牙 (teeth) refers to the serrated appearance of the region between the 'blade' and 'handle' of the Zhang, looking like a set of teeth. I am not sure which part of the implement appears 'dented'. Would "toothed Zhang" or "toothed ritual blade/scepter" not be a better translation? Zarathusa (talk) 18:10, 8 August 2025 (UTC)

@Zarathusa: You can find many examples of 牙璋 on Google. My understanding is that the 牙 refers to 扉牙 ("Door teeth"), the small protrusions between the handle and the blade, on the handguard. Source Also "The "door teeth" are the protruding parts on both sides of the junction between the handle and the body of the scepter, including the ridges and tooth edges." (扉牙，即牙璋柄部和本体交接处两侧凸出的部分，包括阑和齿棱。) . I deleted the Steppe section like Okunew

I deleted the Steppe section because recent ancient DNA evidence suggests this culture is related to indigenous groups like the Shijiahe and Qijia. This was questionable from the outset, as its art forms differ from those of Okunew culture, and its similarity to the Liangzhu of Zhejiang is greater than that of Okunew culture,too many indigenous beast-face element.We can't judge by culture belonging simply by “statues"

Deleted wrong information

There is a lot of misinformation. The earliest Jade Zhang was from the Simatai site. It was not introduced from Shimao to the Central Plains, but from the Central Plains to the Northwest, and then back again, like a boomerang. I also deleted the content about West Asia.
