Correct species name?

According to Plants of the World Online Polygala incarnata L. is a synonym of Senega incarnata (L.) J.F.B.Pastore & J.R.Abbott. Unless there are objections I'm going to edit the page to reflect this and move it. Pinging @JosieM03, did you have a reason to create the article using the name Polygala incarnata, or is this an oversight? 🌿MtBotany (talk) 19:23, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Take a look at the links in the taxon bar at the bottom of the article. There's a significant split between those that place the species in Polygata and in Senega. - UtherSRG (talk) 19:33, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

I've just updated the taxonbar and associated Wikidata. Significantly more use Polygala. WFO even has Polygala as accepted and Senega unplaced. - UtherSRG (talk) 19:51, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing things out, I needed to slow down instead of just blindly following POWO.

I'm not sure that significantly more are using Polygala out anything more than not having updated recently, though. The ones that list Polygala incarnata as the correct name do not list Senega incarnata as a synonym as I would expect if they were actively rejecting this revision. It still could be a case of "too soon" though.

There has been a whole bunch of genus-level splitting in Polygalaceae recently (Pastore and Abbot are the major contributors of new combinations). I don't have any informed opinion about whether the splits are justified, but it seems to me that sources that don't follow the splits fall more under "not up to date" than "actively reject the splits". What you are replying to is old. At the time, it was WP:TOOSOON. Now, POWO has switched back, as we expected it would, so the move to Senega is appropriate. I note NatureServe has also switched to using Senega. - UtherSRG (talk) 03:08, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
