Alternatives

Is anyone aware of discussion within the semantic wiki community on adding markup to wikipedia and then writing external software that uses wikipedia's data to do the same, rather than just recreating the wiki?

You seem to be asking three different questions at once? I believe adding markup to Wikipedia pages won't gain support until Wikipedia itself understands the markup. It would be nice if Wikipedia ran an extension like Semantic MediaWiki; meanwhile, standardization, categorization, consistency, and most importantly use of templates and infoboxes all help humans and machines to discern semantics in Wikipedia articles. DBpedia.org is nifty external software that extracts structured information from Wikipedia pages. -- Skierpage 07:27, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the DBPedia link - that's not far off of what I was looking for. I wasn't suggesting adding this markup to wikipedia itself, since the computability of this stuff is pretty far outside the scope of what wikipedia is supposed to do. I was thinking more of using the information that wikipedia already provides, and then adding on top of it in a separate dataset, which after a cursory glance, it looks like DBPedia may be doing. What seems silly to me is creating a new semantic wiki with a new page for something like "Akron, Ohio" that doesn't start with everything Wikipedia already has on the subject. Please contribute here: Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/infobox_template_coherence, we are trying to create markup in the form of template annotations. There is a direct benefit for Wikipedia right now with just minimal changes. Later as Wikipedia users understand the advantages of having more structure, Semantic Media Wiki could be picking up the trend. SebastianHellmann (talk) 15:02, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
