The word Salaalee is an Afaan Oromo term meaning si ilaalee—I have seen you. According to local history, villagers living around a nearby mountain named the place after a game they played, called argishuu. In the game, one player hid beneath the mountain to stay unseen, while another searched from the hilltop to find and defeat him. Eventually, the hilltop player located the hidden friend, won the game, and shouted eeyyuu… si ilaalee jira—I have found/seen you.
