When I was a kid my mom made Rice Krispie Marshmallow Treats for myself and my siblings. It seemed we always had Rice Krispies in the house and when the Scotcheroo recipe appeared on the box around 1965, my mom tried them out. They quickly became a family favorite. (Her recollection differs greatly. She remembers adapting the Special K peanut butter treats using Rice Krispies and adding the choclate/butterscotch frosting.)
Fast forward to the 1980's. My wife was working as a kitchen manager at Dugan's Deli in Ames, Iowa. She often brainstormed with me on dessert foods that could be offered at Dugan's. I suggested doing Scotcheroos. She made them up, using me for quality/taste control, and they became quite popular at Dugan's. She called them "Andrew's Chewy Bars" being named after the owner's young son. This popularity spread throughout Ames with other businesses offering them also. Fast forward again about 20 years or so: They are offered by a commercial bakery - Best Maid Cookie Co., River Falls, WI (part of the Rise Baking Co.) - and carried by several businesses (like Casey's General Stores) and vending companies (like our local Pepsico vending co.) in Central Iowa. While I hesitate to claim the introduction at Dugan's started this phenomenon, it seems apparent by the timing of incidents that the Dugan's introduction played a distinct role in our area. Also, as of the 2000's, Scotcheroos are now offered by two of the major grocery chains in Iowa - Fareway and HyVee.
I would add that my mom used to make these for the girl's basketball team in Ogden, Iowa during her stint as chaperone for the team. I'm certain this may have also contributed to spread of Scotcheroos as a favorite, tasty homemade treat in our area.

This picture is not representative of Scotcharoos at all - should be much more disparity between the bar and the chocolate. ItsDrewMiller (talk) 20:20, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
