Snake Skin
[edit]Where is the snake skin used to make this instrument obtained? Are the snakes used for the skin an endangered species? And are sanshin instruments in that much of a demand that they pose a danger to the snakes? Why do wildlife preservation laws prohibit the exporting of this instrument? The snake skin is obtained from large snakes in south east Asia, and imported to Okinawa. The sanshin, although popular in Okinawa and throughout Okinawan communities across the world, aren't in so much demand that there is such an impact on the snake population. One large snake skin can be used to create many sanshin. It's also not that the wildlife preservation laws prohibit the importation of just this instrument, but most all objects--boots, wallets, and so on--created from the skins of snakes, crocs, etc... --201.253.213.132 (talk) 20:32, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Tunings
[edit]"Ichi, ni-agi chōshi (一、二揚調子) – "first- and second-strings raised tuning" (i.e. D3, G3, C4) San-sage chōshi (三下げ調子) – "third-string lowered tuning" (i.e. C3, F3, B♭3)"
Aren't these basically the exact same tuning? (i.e., if D3, G3, D4, is hon chōshi, then D3, G3, C4 is san-sage chōshi, which is ichi ni-agi chōshi in the example given here.) Is it just another case of D♭ vs C#? KogeJoe (talk) 06:11, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your base tuning depends on your vocal range. Then these other tunings are song-specific modifications to that one, to make the song easier to play. From that point of view they are different. 202.221.19.240 (talk) 11:38, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
