Name

Why is not this article entitled Samarkand Province as the most common English language name? --Bejnar (talk) 16:54, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

That is a very good question, and 15 years later it still hasn't been answered. But here's a fun fact; the Uzbekistan Government website is available in four languages; English, Русский (Russian), Uzbekcha and O'zbekcha. Presumably the last two are local dialects.

I selected English, and the Uzbek Gov't site gave me SAMARKAND.

Then I selected Русский, and the answer came up Самаркандской, which Google then translated to SAMARKAND

In this case, I believe this PRIMARY source is exactly what we need to confirm what most of us already know is the answer.

Samarkand is about half way down the list.

1. Samarqand is the original Uzbeck or Tajik spelling, but I cannot find any English sources using it, except those that are directly quoting Uzbeck or Tajik.
2. Further support comes from the Uzbek airline image; look closely at the logo on the side of the aircraft.

4. Finally, consider a PRIMARY source - the Uzbekistan Government. Their website is available in English, and will take you to a page describing the 14 regional assemblies (Khokimiyats), including the SAMARKAND Regional Administration.
