It was a standard DOJ/NSD charge

@Soibangla: thanks for raising this. To me, the article as it stands doesn't seem to be misleading on this point, but I've no objection to its being clarified. The crucial thing would be to explain how the charges and the investigation related to each other in Patten's case. Whatever is said about this must of course be WP:VERIFIABLE and contain no WP:OR, not least because this is a WP:BLP article (but I'm sure that goes without saying).
