The size of Sachicasaurus

The cited source for the 17t mass has conflicting information. It states that Sachicasaurus was 17t and then almost immediately after states that its family of pliosaurs maxes out at 15.5t. I'm also not sure of the methodology behind the 17t claim. Ashe VSM (my talk page) 19:31, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

There were issues in the source because, while available online, it's a preprint work, a work in progress, not a fully published and peer-reviewed publication. The latest revision, dated to April 28 of this year, removes that conflicting information and all mass estimates went down, now 12t for Sachicasaurus. I guess a case could be made for removing that source entirely until it's actually published. As for other estimates, as far as I'm aware, there are no other mass estimates for this taxon in the literature, perhaps those others you've seen come from enthusiast circles. Probably. I've seen mass estimates of ~15t from amateur (albeit pretty credible) skeletal artists and such. All we really know is that it's one of if not the largest pliosaur(s). Ashe VSM (my talk page) 12:22, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
