there was no education in Polish language

My understanding was the Roman Catholic church would teach Polish language to children at that time, people would go to the priest to read letters from America and he would write letters to America for the illiterate. Back in 1964 as a boy I spoke to an old woman who lived in Russian Poland, she claimed that the street signs were in Russian and that Polish was forbidden in public.--Woogie10w (talk) 14:33, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

New title

I have given this article a new grammatically correct title, because the noun Partition is denoting a place... the real subject here, and "the Russian" serves only as an adjective 'describing' word Partition as one of three sectors of partitioned Poland. Merge Proposal

I propose merging Russian Partition into Congress Poland. While the two articles have slightly different scopes, pretty much all of this content is either already included within the Congress Poland article or could easily be mentioned. Considering how much overlap there is, I don't see much of a reason for this article to exist. Harry Hinderson (talk) 16:33, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

I'm not sure this would be correct. Part of the lead is misleading in claiming that the Russian partition equals Congress Poland ("sometimes called Kingdom of Poland or Congress Poland" seems to be unsourced). The term Russian partition primarily refers to the lands annexed by the Russian Empire during the three partitions in 1772–1795, and that's what the rest of the lead says: "constituted the former territories of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that were annexed by the Russian Empire in the course of late-18th-century Partitions of Poland." In contrast, Congress Poland was created in 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, from territories that initially belonged to the Prussian partition and the Austrian Partition. The Russian partition is represented in reddish-brown on the map, while Congress Poland was formed from the blue (Prussian) and the green (Austrian) areas. The predecessor of Congress Poland was the Duchy of Warsaw - created from Polish lands ceded by Prussia to France. It could be said that in the 19th century, the Russian Partition was expanded to include Congress Poland. Hedviberit (talk) 15:35, 24 October 2025 (UTC)

I am aware of the difference between the Russian Partition area and Congress Poland, despite the overlap.

I was about to say: "A majority of the content on this article purely relates to Congress Poland. About half of the history section, a majority of the society section, and the economy section are sourced from content about Congress Poland specifically or the treatment of poles in general in the Russian Empire. Not a whole lot of the article discusses the area displayed in reddish-brown." But then I recalled that the various uprisings took place across the entirety of the former Polish-Lithuanian lands in the Russian Empire, even if they were primarily centralized in Congress Poland. So I suppose that's not true at all. After mulling over the articles about Russian Poland a bit more, I think I was jumping the gun a bit by opening a merge request.
