Ron Protas was the assistant and heir to the only dancer in United States history to receive the highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom (which she received from Gerald Ford, whose wife, Betty Ford, had been a student of Graham's). Martha Graham was voted "Dancer of the Century" by Time magazine. After her death, Ron Protas held the copyright to her ballets and prevented her company, the oldest continually performing dance company in the world, from performing. Only after a lengthy, costly, and high profile court battle, were rights restored to the company to perform the ballets. He is referenced in the New York Times, the notable Graham biography by Agnes DeMille, and in Martha Graham's own autobiography.
